3 stars (but made without the pork/bacon fat) (on a 5 star scale)
p. 84-85
Eh. Too pasty. Not flowing even when heated to melting in the microwave. Like pinto beans that have been mashed, nothing more. (i.e., both taste and texture are not really right) Probably needs substantially more oil/fat, especially meat-based fat.

exactly...... it needs the fat to be called refried beans.. O.o
I am still trying to figure out what the purpose of these reviews are for when in reality - your reviews are of recipes that you have revised in some way and totally affected the outcome of the original recipe from Rick Bayless.
These reviews are mostly for my own notes about which recipes I want to make again. I like to eat healthy so I occasionally alter recipes such as this one. Usually, I stick as close to the recipe as possible, and I'm always clear about where I deviate.
I admit that in this case I deviated a ton and it shouldn't even be considered the same recipe. I just tried it because I hoped I could find a healthy, good fried beans recipe. This wasn't it. I only posted this entry because I wanted to document my experiment somewhere.
